RHRC Data is an easily searchable database of the laws, people, organizations, and litigation involved in sexual and reproductive health and justice in the United States, as well as the connections among them. Primarily focused on the anti-choice universe, the database provides factual summaries of key topics, lawsuits, and laws. It is available for use by the public with credit to RH Reality Check.

What's New?

In July, 2015, the Center for Medical Progress released the first of a series of heavily-edited videos attacking Planned Parenthood over its alleged mishandling of fetal tissue. While no evidence has been found of any wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood or its affiliates, lawmakers across the country have rushed to pass legislation regulating the care of aborted fetal tissue. To view a comprehensive list of fetal tissue regulation efforts in the United States for the years 2013-2016, click here.

* Database includes all anti-choice bills introduced in the 2013-2015 legislative sessions.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

Laws

Looking for information about a particular law? This database contains an archive of legislation, including summaries and analyses of the bills. Currently, the database contains all of the anti-choice bills introduced in Arizona, Florida, Michigan, New Mexico Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin during the 2013 and 2014 legislative sessions. Be sure to check back periodically as RHRC will be updating and expanding the information in this database on a regular basis.

People

Start here if you’re looking for information about legislators who have authored, sponsored, or otherwise supported anti-choice legislation. RHRC has provided links that show how people are connected to specific laws. The database allows users to click through to a page for each person, with contact information, the person’s position or job description, and a list of legislation with which that person is associated. RHRC Data uses Open States (openstates.org) to provide basic information about legislators.

Organizations

Many of the anti-choice bills proposed in recent years have been written and promulgated by national organizations with ties to the political Right. This database identifies bills that are based on “model” laws written by these organizations, and contains the names and descriptions of those organizations. It also lists the organizations involved in challenging various bills in court.

Cases

Want to know whether a particular law is being challenged in court? This database contains a summary of legal cases related to anti-choice legislation along with links to relevant court filings and documents.

HOW YOU CAN USE THIS TOOL

The database contains various dropdown boxes (State, Law Topic, Law Status) to allow you to customize your search return results. For example, if you want to search for current laws in Texas, simply click “Texas” under the State dropdown box, and “Current” under the Law Status dropdown box.

Be sure to check the date of the most recent update. While RH Reality Check is committed to providing accurate and up-to-date information, we also advise users to double-check dates as this is a fast-moving field. For instance, even if a Law Status is “Current,” make sure to read the summary of the law. Many of the legal challenges do not challenge the entire piece of legislation, and the summary will tell you which pro-visions are current and which are blocked.
